21st November, 2024
Highlighting the Role of Television in Supporting Democracy
On November 21, the world celebrates World Television Day, a day established by the United Nations to recognize television’s significant role in informing, entertaining, and connecting people across the globe. This year, as media companies worldwide join the celebration, United Media, the leading media company in Southeast Europe, proudly highlights the transformative power of multiplatform TV in fostering democracy and cultural dialogue.
World Television Day 2024 emphasizes the enduring role of television as a trusted and versatile medium. United Media, alongside egta (the international trade body for multiplatform TV and audio businesses), ACT (the Association of Commercial Television and VOD Services in Europe), and GTVG (Global TV Group), supports the creation and dissemination of a 30-second video spot to be broadcast on European TV channels and shared across digital and social platforms.
This year marks the 28th edition of World Television Day, celebrating television’s unparalleled ability to inform, unite, and empower society. The occasion underscores the vital contribution of television to supporting democracy by providing reliable information, fostering cultural exchange, and ensuring media plurality.
“Television remains a cornerstone of modern society. Its unique ability to inform, connect, and entertain makes it an indispensable platform for fostering democratic values. At United Media, we are proud to lead the way in delivering high-quality content that drives social dialogue, empowers communities, and creates shared cultural moments. As we celebrate World Television Day, we reaffirm our commitment to the vital role of media in shaping a more informed and connected world”, said Aleksandra Subotić, CEO of United Media.
United Media’s Role in Shaping the Future of TV
As the leading media company in Southeast Europe, United Media is committed to innovation and excellence in television and digital media. By investing in trusted journalism and original content, United Media continues to foster a vibrant media landscape that upholds democratic values.
United Media strongly advocates and invests in the next wave of journalistic talent helping to ensure that future reporting in the region remains rigorous, impartial, and impactful. The company offers regular participation in different scholarship programs such as scholarships at Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University, providing emerging journalists from the SEE with opportunities for advanced study, research, and networking. United Media mission is to foster a new generation of journalists so they can be committed to excellence, ethical reporting, and the values of independent media.
United Media also collaborates with numerous international NGOs such as Reporters Without Borders, the International Press Institute, the Safe Journalists Network, and the OSCE to safeguard press freedom and support independent journalism in region. Such collaborations are essential in a region where media freedoms are often under threat, and where outlets like United Media’s N1 and Nova TV are among the few remaining voices committed to independent and objective reporting.
This World Television Day, United Media invites everyone to reflect on the unique power of television to inform, inspire, and unite. Together, we celebrate the enduring impact of this medium in creating a more connected and informed society.
