Bulgarian NOVA turns film casting into hit reality format
13th January, 2026
On Sunday evening, NOVA aired the premiere of “You’re Playing… Stoichkov,” an original reality-documentary format that turns a traditional casting process into prime-time television. The series follows a real-life search for the actor who will portray Bulgarian football legend Hristo Stoichkov in an upcoming feature film dedicated to his life and career.
According to official people meter data, the debut episode was the most-watched television programme among viewers aged 18–59, achieving an audience share of 29.2%. The show ranked comfortably ahead of all other broadcasters in the same time slot, securing a clear lead over the second-placed channel.
Broadcast every Sunday at 8:00 p.m., the format offers viewers rare behind-the-scenes access to a high-stakes casting process. Contestants are put through a series of demanding challenges designed to test not only their acting abilities, but also the discipline, drive and competitive spirit that defined Stoichkov as one of football’s most iconic figures.
Hosted by actor Alexander Sano, the programme attracted more than 250 applicants from across the country. Following initial auditions, the strongest contenders advanced to the next phase, described by the producers as an intensive “school” rather than a conventional casting — a process intended to prepare the eventual winner for the responsibility of portraying one of Bulgaria’s greatest sporting heroes.
The jury responsible for selecting the lead actor includes acclaimed actress Ania Pencheva, film director Martin Makariev, and journalist and Stoichkov biographer Vladimir Pamukov. Each episode also features guest personalities who have met Stoichkov in person, offering personal insights as they assess the contestants’ progress, charisma and determination.
The strong launch of the series builds on existing audience interest in Stoichkov-related content. A documentary about the football legend, currently available in the NOVA Docu catalogue on EON, ranks among the most-watched titles in Bulgaria, with more than 150,000 views, underlining the enduring appeal of one of the country’s most celebrated sports figures.
