11th March, 2021
Viewers will have the opportunity to watch the story about the life of King Alexander I Karađorđević on NOVA S from March 15th, when the series “Alexander of Yugoslavia” by Zdravko Šotra, based on the novel of the same name, written by Vuk Drašković, will start airing.
The story about the “unifying king” begins with his return from the First World War to liberated Belgrade in November 1918 and ends with his assassination in Marseille in 1934.
The series, which will have 15 episodes, was filmed in the original production of United Media and will be broadcast every Monday at 9 pm on NOVA S. For those who are impatient, this time the popular “binging” will be available, respectively the opportunity that you can watch the whole season at once already from March 12th via EON, D3 or Total TV platform, via any internet in Serbia via EON Mobile or EON Smart TV application and on eon.tv, in countries in the region and abroad via NetTV Plus platform.
“We are pleased that we had the opportunity to realize this project and make a film and series that will bring viewers closer to the character of Alexander I. Karađorđević, whose ideas are still reflected in our lives. Through this opus we get to know his thoughts about the state, state organization and about citizens and hope that viewers will enjoy this story, that the series and the film will remain a document for future generations,” says the managing director of United Media company Aleksandra Subotić.
The director and screenwriter Zdravko Šotra points out that he is very happy about the beginning of the broadcast, as this is one of the most difficult projects in his long career.
“We worked under non-normal conditions during the pandemic, but we quickly forgot about that because we had a very responsible work ahead of us – to tell the story of Alexander I Karađorđević. He was a person whose importance touched the fate not only of our people, but of the entire region. He is a person about whom there are many controversies, and above all, a person who has been accused of many injustices. The biggest problem is the insufficient knowledge of many truths about his life, the ignorance of what difficult tasks fate imposed on him even as a young man. I will remind you that at the age of 24 he was the commander-in-chief of the Serbian army in the wars, and then he took on the great and difficult task of creating a state of the southern Slavs, and in the end, he paid for it with his life,” says Šotra.
He adds that the novel by Vuk Drašković, on which the screenplay is based, was an excellent basis for telling this story.
“I am pleased that the viewers will see a television series about King Alexander Karađorđević, the greatest war victor, statesman, peacemaker, visionary and tragedian in our history. He was the Serbian Bonaparte and Hannibal, Yugoslav Bismarck, and Garibaldi. He was the first victim of fascism in Europe. He wanted Yugoslavia to become America in the Balkans. Because of these “sins” the communists declared him a dictator, the Croatian Ustasha an occupier of Greater Serbia, the Serbian Black Hand and the Crnorisci a national traitor. Monuments to Alexander are in Paris and Marseille. In Belgrade there are neither monuments nor the streets of the victorious king and unifier “, emphasizes the writer Vuk Drašković.
He emphasizes that the director Zdravko Šotra and the elite of our actors will alleviate with this series the Serbian, but also the Yugoslav transgressions against Alexander of Yugoslavia.
More than 130 actors participated in this great project, which was filmed last year. King Alexander is played by Ljubomir Bulajić and Queen Marija by Tamara Aleksić. The cast of actors also includes Irfan Mensur, Petar Strugar, Branislav Lečić, Žarko Laušević, Voja Brajović, Nikola Kojo, Goran Šušljik, Sloboda Mićalović, Nada Macanković, Nataša Ninković, Nela Mihailović, Danica Maksimović, Anica Dobra, Zoran Cvijanović, Vojin Ćetković, Jelica Sretenović…
