Croatian Nova TV takes viewers on a Vatican virtual tour and details the pope’s election

23rd April, 2025

Croatian Nova TV has once again demonstrated its outstanding integration of technology and television journalism, this time by offering viewers a unique virtual tour of the Vatican and an in-depth reconstruction of the papal conclave. This innovative segment was entirely conceptualized and created by Nova TV’s Marketing Production Graphics Department.

Using advanced technology and a creative approach, Nova TV brought audiences closer to one of the most secretive and significant rites of the Catholic Church – the conclave, the election of a new pontiff, which must take place within 14 to 20 days following the death of the Pope.

Nova TV reporter Dino Goleš was filmed in a green-screen virtual studio and then seamlessly integrated into a meticulously recreated 3D model of St. Peter’s Square. Viewers were also treated to a breathtaking look inside St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Through 3D reconstruction, every detail was rendered to perfection – including masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s Last Judgment. The segment culminated with the iconic white smoke rising from the chimney, signalling to the faithful in the square that a new pope had been chosen.

This is not the first time the Production Graphics team at Nova TV’s Marketing Department has pushed boundaries. Once again, they have successfully raised the bar in visual storytelling. The VR segment was created using software originally developed for the video game industry, which is now increasingly used in television journalism.

With this project, Nova TV reaffirms its commitment to innovation and the application of cutting-edge technology in the service of informing its viewers.
