N1 Serbia nominated for the Reporters Without Borders Courage Prize
20th October, 2025
The newsroom of N1 Serbia has been nominated for the Courage Prize awarded by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) — an international recognition honoring journalists and media outlets that demonstrate exceptional courage in practicing and defending journalism in hostile environments, despite threats to their freedom and safety.
In its statement, the jury emphasized that “the personnel of N1 TV embody journalistic courage in Serbia, where press freedom is at an all-time low.” The jury highlighted that N1 is the only major TV channel providing reliable coverage of the increasingly violent mass protests against corruption since November 2024, noting that the network has been subjected to constant hostility from the authorities.
The 33rd edition of the RSF Press Freedom Awards will be a special one, held as part of the organization’s 40th anniversary festival at the Gaîté Lyrique cultural centre in Paris on 15 November 2025. This year’s shortlist features 29 journalists, photojournalists, and media outlets from 18 countries, recognized across five categories: the Courage Prize, the Impact Prize, the Independence Prize, the Mohamed Maïga Prize for African Investigative Journalism, and the Lucas Dolega–SAIF Photo Prize.
N1 Serbia is the only nominee from this part of Europe.
Other nominees for the Courage Prize include Atiana Serge Oulon, publisher of a leading investigative newspaper in Burkina Faso; Sevinj Vagifgizi, editor of Azerbaijan’s independent outlet Abzas Media, sentenced to nine years in prison earlier this year; Frenchie Mae Cumpio, a Filipino journalist who has been imprisoned for more than five years on fabricated charges; Angélica Cárcamo, a journalist from El Salvador who has long advocated for fact-checking, transparency, and solidarity among journalists, and who was forced to leave her country this year; as well as Noor Swirki, a journalist reporting daily from Gaza, Palestine.
The international jury includes prominent journalists and press freedom defenders such as Rana Ayyub (The Washington Post), Raphaëlle Bacqué (Le Monde), Mikhail Zygar (founding editor of Dozhd TV), Frederik Obermaier (Süddeutsche Zeitung), and others, chaired by Pierre Haski, president of RSF.
