Nikola Radišić Addresses ENEX Meeting: The Alarming Reality of Media Freedom in Serbia
7th April, 2025
N1’s European correspondent Nikola Radišić participated in this year’s ENEX Editorial Coordinators Meeting, held at RTL Nederland headquarters in Hilversum, the Netherlands. The event brought together representatives from over 50 media organizations across the globe, all members of ENEX (European News Exchange), to discuss the future of journalism and the evolving challenges faced by newsrooms today.
Founded in 1993, ENEX is a global association of commercial broadcasters that facilitates the sharing of news content and production resources. Today, the network connects more than 75 major media outlets across five continents.
During his presentation, Radišić offered a sobering account of the systemic pressures and political targeting that N1 has faced since its founding. He described how these pressures have escalated over the years, often coming directly from the highest levels of government — including the President, Prime Minister, and other top officials. Journalists at N1 are frequently labeled as “foreign mercenaries,” “traitors,” or even enemies of the state, simply for reporting truthfully and professionally on events such as student protests and political developments.
Radišić emphasized that recent accusations have gone so far as to claim that N1 is actively working against the state and supporting a so-called “color revolution.” He warned that such rhetoric has serious consequences, not only for the safety of journalists but also for public trust in the media as a whole.
“I’m glad that journalists from countries facing their own specific challenges recognized the gravity and uniqueness of the attacks on independent media in Serbia,” Radišić said after the event. “They understood how this undermines society and how dangerous it is when the state adopts an aggressive stance toward the press. It threatens both the safety of reporters and the very survival of independent journalism.”
Many attendees expressed shock at the situation and said they are eager to follow developments in Serbia more closely going forward.
One of the key themes of the meeting was the role of digital and editorial innovation in reshaping news exchange in the modern era. Special focus was given to the rise of artificial intelligence in television journalism, including its use in content production and distribution. Participants discussed not only the efficiency gains AI can bring to newsrooms but also the ethical and professional implications it raises — particularly regarding accuracy, accountability, and journalistic integrity.
The gathering concluded with thanks to host Eric Smink of RTL4 and ENEX Managing Director Adrian Wells. The overarching message of the summit was clear: in an age of global crises and disinformation, international collaboration among responsible media outlets is more important than ever to preserve truth and public trust.
