Weekend with pops

Summary

What can a man do when he finds out that he has cancer and just two or three months left to live?

Milovan Mitrović, aka Kašika, a middle-aged Belgrade criminal, is trying to find the answer to that question by spending time with Ognjen, his 11-year-old son from a previous marriage. What complicates matters is the rift between the father and the son, who had not seen each other for a full five years. When he gets the opportunity to spend a whole weekend with his son, Kašika puts all his dealings aside, in order to teach his son important lessons about life and survival “on the streets”. At the same time, he is trying to toughen up the boy and drive out of him all the things that he sees as soft and weak.

He takes the boy to his villa to meet his second wife, and half-sister Vasilisa. He gives him expensive gifts, teaches him how to fight and is irritated that Ognjen’s mother took him to the ballet and that he plays the piano. Kašika decides to have Ognjen baptized, organizes everything, but when they get to the monastery where the baptism is supposed to take place, he learns that Ognjen was already baptized.

Ognjen is supposed to read “Tom Sawyer” over the weekend, but as he can’t find the time to do it, Kašika takes him to meet his father, a retired school teacher who now works as a parking lot attendant in front of Belgrade’s famous riverboat clubs. Kašika and his father get into a row. Ognjen stays with his grandfather to read the book, and Kašika goes to a club to seek solace in singing and alcohol. Ognjen tells his grandfather that his father is dying of cancer, and then they go to the club, where Kašika promises them that he will get treatment.
