United Group enters renewable energy sector with investments in Bulgaria
22nd January, 2025
United Group has announced an initial investment of €120 million in renewable energy in Bulgaria, including three solar power plants and a large wind farm in the northeast of the country.
CEO of United Group Viktoriya Boklag emphasized that the projects will produce approximately 310,000 megawatt-hours annually and significantly contribute to Bulgaria’s energy transition.
She highlighted that by 2027, these facilities will generate 160% of the electricity needed for United Group’s operations in Bulgaria, covering 65% of the Group’s overall energy consumption. Boklag described this as a transformative step, not only for their business but also for promoting green energy in Bulgaria.
The solar plants will be built on repurposed industrial land to minimize environmental impact, while the wind farm will play a critical role in the country’s energy future.
Boklag reiterated the company’s commitment to sustainability, setting a goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its entire value chain by 2040.
“This is not just about reducing costs or meeting energy needs—it’s about setting new standards for our industry and supporting the EU’s climate goals while fostering economic growth,” Boklag stated.
United Group’s CEO noted that United Group has achieved significant milestones in Bulgaria’s telecommunications sector, including the introduction of the country’s first commercial 5G network, which is now the largest in Bulgaria. The network currently covers 91% of the population, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and connectivity in the region.
She also called for collaboration between governments, companies, and communities to create lasting solutions, underlining United Group’s transition from a telecommunications and media company to also be an energy company driving change and innovation.
Subotic: Sustainability becomes a priority for the media industry
CEO of United Media emphasized the importance of United Group’s investment in renewable energy during the energy panel in Sofia.
For a company managing 120 media operations, this type of investment is incredibly encouraging, Subotic stated, highlighting how sustainability is becoming a key focus across all business segments, including the media industry.
She noted that media production and the broader media sector are energy-intensive, especially with the rapid development of technologies like artificial intelligence and advanced production tools.
The group is well aware of the high energy consumption in media production and the industry as a whole. Therefore, green energy is something United Media truly looks forward to, Subotic added.
